Every year, Studio 400 builds an installation for the viewing of their thesis research books. Each time, there is a theme, usually revolving around a single material. In 2015, packaging tape was the chosen element. Two large steel frame cubes are the primary structural support elements. These cubes house the two main atria where the books are suspended.

To add depth and ambiguity to the shape, tendrils extend out of the primary shapes. These inhabitable tubes are alcoves for reading, relaxing, and conversing. They are attached to the glulam columns and beams of the building. Each tube supports well over 600 pounds, and the central tubes can support well over 1000 pounds.

The shape was made by lining strips of tape vertically, then tightening with straps and rope, and then layering tape horizontally over and over. The horizontal spaces were creating by lining horizontal strips, and then wrapping around layer after layer, creating a flexibly, yet sturdy walkable surface.

This was a collaborative project for Studio 400. Included 18 total team members.
