Split Hybridity

Location: Santa Maria, CA

Term: Fall 2011

A multi-family housing unit located in the central coast of California, this project provides a unique experience for the inhabitants. Establishing a contrast to standard suburban development, Split Hybridity produces a large amount of green space that is removed from the street for privacy. While the families will live separately, some communal spaces do exist: the kitchen, circulation, and outdoor space. This home develops a new type of dual family residency which increases inter-family communication while providing a sense of privacy at the same.

This project offered a unique experience working with the CNC router. A landscape was created digitally, through the inspiration of parti lines on a Richard Diebenkorn painting. An inverted form of this landscape was routed in foam with CNC machine, and then plaster was poured created the final landscape.
